“Dulcitico” bell pepper hybrid

This variety was developed at the Fabio Baudrit Experimental Agriculture station and it favors cultivators due to improved characteristics: it has a larger production potential, higher resistance to disease and a higher level of adaptation to Costa Rican climate conditions. Replaces imported varieties and more than two million seeds have been sold, which is equivalent to 100 cultivated hectares.



“Póngale Vida”
“Póngale Vida”

The “Póngale vida” educational model is an innovative proposal from researchers of the Pharmacy School which shows us how to deal with, in the social and educational context, the issue of obesity and nutritional deficiencies in children and teenagers. The proposal is based in a model for classrooms, schools, families and communities as part of the curriculum at national educational centers. 524 teachers and 7272 students have been part of the program. We are working on generating a strategic alliance with the Ministry of Education in order to reformulate national menus and take the model to the entire country.

Coffee extract cream

Avocato moisturizing cream is a base product used to create other high added value cosmetics using ingredients with antioxidant properties such as mature coffee and vanilla produced at the Natural Product Research Center (CIPRONA). This product was licensed to the Monteverde Cosmetics microcompany and is being sold in more than 20 locations around the country with sales of up to 3.500 moisturizing creams. Recently it started being sold at shops in the Juan Santamaria International Airport and they started being exported to China.



 “Pococí” papaya hybrid
“Pococí” papaya hybrid

This variety was produced at the Fabio Baudrit Moreno Experimental Station. It transformed the Costa Rican papaya sector reaching more than 700 cultivated hectares. This papaya is better tasting, improved agricultural characteristics and proven exporting potential. Approximately 250 papaya producers grow it and it is the first Costa Rican papaya with exporting potential which has generated profits of $29,4 million dollars during the last 5 years.

Dehydrated coffee waste

Dehydrated coffee waste is produced using technology developed by CITA and Food Technology Faculty researchers and it allows the preservation of coffee functional characteristics. This technology was licensed to the Helsar de Zarcero PYME which currently exports it to the United States where it is sold to make infusions and has been widely accepted. This new project has allowed the PYME to generate at least 4 direct employment positions and to give the coffee waste an added value.



Pinticas cookies and Pintochips chips
Pinticas cookies and Pintochips chips

Bean and rice PINTICAS cookies and PINTOCHIPS chips are a highly impactful innovation from the social standpoint. These products were developed at the CITA and were transferred to the Network of Rural Women which is made up by more than 600 women. Currently, they are making these products at El Pavón, Los Chiles and in Cariari, Pococí.

These women have been nationally and internationally recognized. In 2015, the project was recognized as a Social Innovator by the INNOVAGRO International Network.

Staggered card for blind people

Project produced at the Plastic Arts School, it is a device that allows this population to recognize bills in order to prevent them from getting swindled. They have been distributed free of charge to more than 2000 blind people around the country by the National Board of Blind People, the Student Advisory and Services Center for Disabled Students at the UCR, the Hellen Keller Rehabilitation and Formation Institute and the Special Learning Center of Heredia.

Artistic technique developed at the Plastic Arts School which allows the creation of engravings without the need of toxic substances, which has a positive impact over the health of people making the engravings and generates possibilities for children and teenagers to learn it. The technique has been used by national and international artists and has been taught to more than 96 people in several workshops:  Islita Museum, The Artist’s House, the Join Cultures Foundation in Nicaragua. We are also exploring contacts with the University of Uruguay and the National Arts University of Argentina.

These beverages were developed by CITA and CIRAD using a technology that allows the preservation of all nutritional properties of these fruits. Studies conducted at the University have shown that these products may have a positive impact on people with dyspepsia and diabetes.

This project spanned a spinoff called Siwa which is already marketing the beverage in the national market. It is also seeking partners for the production of the fruit.

SERCAPEX

SERCAPEX is the first official spin-off produced by knowledge from the Fabio Baudrit Moreno Experimental Station and the Agricultural School. SERCAPEX has created jobs for 4 full time employees as well as other occasional employees.



“El viaje de LeoBalllena” (“Leo the Whale’s journy”) book-album
“El viaje de LeoBalllena” (“Leo the Whale’s journy”) book-album

LeoBallena is a book-album that seeks to stimulate thoughtful reading and visual alphabetization through the interpretation of the language in images, artistic education and environmental conservation through the depiction of situations such as whaling and its implications and artistic techniques in children, since the style of this illustration unites readers to techniques such as collage, marbled paper and engraving. This book-album was generated by researchers at the School of Plastic Arts. Currently, the schools at Flor de Bahía and San Josecito at Bahía Ballena are equipped 100 book-albums.



Ecokhemia
Ecokhemia

With the biodegradable cleaning product line developed at the Natural Product Research Center [Centro de Investigaciones en Productos Naturales] (CIPRONA) made up by wax, window cleaner and sanitizer, we created a University Spin-Off called Ecokhemia which was founded by a student who recently graduated from the UCR. Ecokhemia is a company founded in 2011 whose mission is to support companies during government transactions for chemical products and their environmental management by using an environment friendly strategic perspective.



Elbe Potato

The Elbe potato variety generated at the Agricultural Research Center [Centro de Investigaciones Agronómicas (CIA)], is resistant to certain plagues, it has a larger amount of dry matter which makes it ideal for industrial processing and is also resistant to climate change.

It has been licensed to the “El Surco” national company which will ensure the availability of potato seeds in a wide ranging reproduction scheme that currently has over 30 reproduction cultivators and the list is increasing. This ensures access to a previously non-existent excellent quality seed to the national potato sector.



Antivenom
Antivenom

Antivenoms developed by the Clodomiro Picado Institute (ICP) at the University of Costa Rica are Costa Rican antiserums which have demonstrated their quality and efficacy for the treatment of people affected by snake bites. At the Central American level, UCR has helped save 4.500 lives per year with these antivenoms.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka reports 35.000 snake bite accidents per year, which means that this antivenom will have a high level of impact over the public health in this Asian country. The institute will send 2.500 vials of powdered antivenom to this country and a knowledge transfer will take place to ensure that Sri Lanka has the necessary knowledge to create a lab capable of manufacturing this antivenom.



MUSICAR
MUSICAR

Initiative that began at the School of Music which emphasizes, affirms and celebrates musical learning from sensations, emotions, thoughts, histories and self-image forged from formal and informal social experiences.  More than 1000 people have been sensitized including students and teachers from different academic areas, Education Ministry advisors, Children’s Hospital patients and subjects in rehab at IAFA. Specifically, this experience has been experienced by 120 children from several schools such as the Enrique de Ossó Center, La Salle and Franz Liszt; as well as independent musicians and ensambles.
