Here readers will find technological surveillance reports for several subjects with intellectual property belonging to PROINNOVA’s innovation managers. Technological surveillance is an essential tool to detect technological innovation opportunities which allow improvements of processes, products and services.

Technological surveillance report about Xylella fastidiosa

Xylella fastidiosa (Xf) is a bacteria that attaches to the xylem of plants affecting the flow of water and minerals in savia bruta, it is known for its negative impact over certain commercial species producing diseases that affect the production of fruit or their growth depending on the specific type of plant.

In 2013, this bacteria was named as responsible for the “olive quick decline syndrome” (OQDS), which affected olive production at the Lecce province in Italy, this not only impacted one seasons crops but also, due to the fact that phytosanitary authorities recommended cutting down and incinerating affected trees to prevent the spread of the bacteria, it will affect the production of olives (and their derivates) for years to come. Due to this, the European Union (EU) took particular measures in order to contain and eradicate the bacteria in the affected areas and prevent its spread to other member countries, including import barriers to some species of live plants from certain countries.

Costa Rica was particularly affected by this measure since the phoenix palm tree (Phoenix roebelenii, Pr) was the main ornamental plant exported from the country to the UE and now it cannot be exported since it was included in this list. Additionally, genetic evidence has attributed a subspecies of Xf called pauca, which is found in our country, as the variety of Xf affective olive trees. Due to this situation, PROINNOVA created this technological surveillance report for Xf.
